Author’s note: inspired by Jane Austen’s Lady Susan . Her employment of the epistolary novel format intrigued me.
Opening :
The most turbulent period, in the long history of the Netherworld, has been labeled the “War of Liberation” by historians. It was an era of unsettled political events filled with conflict. Very few who lived in this era were left unmarked by what unfolded. Yet this most interesting year, and what followed, has never been comprehensively covered our written histories. This has been due to an across-the-board campaign, by various supernatural governments, to destroy records that would have shed light on this epoch. So great has been the documentary loss that most of the details about what occurred lies forever lost in shadow. Even now many historians merely repeat the myths that have grown up about both the war and people who held offices during these events. Who has not heard about Galen the Tyrant who oppressed his people while illegally seizing lands that did not belong to him. A sexual degenerate who, when danger threatened, hid under the guise of illness. In reviewing the documents I discovered, I found that questions could be raised about what we read in our history books about this era.
For the last 20 years, I have been seeking out and collecting fragmentary documents and articles that escaped this conscious governmental purging. These precious few documents are set out below in a chronological order. My thanks to many families who saved such precious papers and shared them with me. I believe they establish a timeline and an overall view of this most unsettling historical event. Some of them are undated. In those instances, I have placed them in an order guided their reference to events that occurred. I freely admit it is a scantly record involving fragmentary pieces that somehow avoided destruction. I therefore urge my reader to be cautious about forming any opinion about the people who are known to have been in positions of power in that era. I would also like to thank families, who heard about my endeavors, and shared with me personal letters that they had in their possession. Where I felt it necessary, I have inserted commentaries under the cited documents.

Capital Talk
By Uganda Grabtas
Everybody who is anybody in the capital has been seeking a ticket to this season’s premiere of the Fae opera: Latra, Sovereign of the Corsair Court. With its themes of war and defiance, this performance is timely in every sense of the word. Rumor has it that Vara, the famed opera singer, personally selected this piece. She was heard to refer to it as a reflection of modern times. This writer certainly agrees with her.
For those who are not familiar with this artistic creation, the story revolves around a pirate queen and her valiant but doomed defense of her corsair capital against invading non-Fae barbarian forces. In the end, rather than submit and kneel before them, she and her maidens dance into the pyre-kissed flames consuming their Great Temple of the Shining Folk. Who can forget that final aria where she and her maidens sway into the flaming temple defiantly singing the words:
With valor bright, we faced a foe of boundless might. This be our triumph. We Fae yielded not, nor shall we evermore. Hear my last whispers upon the twilight breeze. Our brief span here wanes. Yet solace blooms, knowing our deeds shall echo through the ages. Now, to the hallowed grove of the gods we go. Embracing hot wildfire’s kiss that will swiftly carry our Fae spirits into their sweet embrace.”
Always an opera known for its explosiveness both in song and spectacle, Latra’s call to courage as she faces death has relevance today. Rumors swirl about possible elf or goblin invasions of the Kingdom of Unbowed. Amid such gossip, we are all on edge. Dispatches from the palace have assured the public that under no circumstances would they permit the Fae population of that troublesome kingdom to be placed under the boot of either the puritanical elves or the degenerate goblin governments.
Speaking off the record, certain palace sources have assured us that plans are being formulated to send more troops to the Wegard Fortress as a gesture of support for that kingdom. In addition, diplomatic notes have been sent to both the elf and goblin governments. We applaud our famed singer Vara for bringing us an opera to inspire the Fae nation in the face of such uncertainty.

Private diplomatic message to the elf and goblin governments from Queen Titania’s First Minister that were found among the papers of the late First Minister Valde (Undated).
Please be advised at any military action against the Kingdom of Unbowed will be strongly scrutinized by this government. We have been informed that both your governments have made plans to invade six of their ten districts. Under the terms of an agreement, the heavily goblin populated three districts in the northwest are to be annexed by the goblin realm. The three northeastern provinces, composed of a mostly elvish population, are to be incorporated by the Elf Republic.
We would remind you that the Kingdom’s southern three districts consist of a Fae population rising above eighty-five percent. Any attempt by troops from your realms to enter those areas would be met with stiff resistance by us. Frankly, it would be considered an act of war against our Kingdom. We advise caution before you undertake any action that would require such hostility.
We would also remind you that the Kingdom’s center capital district has a highly mixed species population. While we in no way endorse any military action against this Kingdom, we would also strongly advise you not to invade that particular district without consulting with us.
We are aware that any invasion might cause the collapse of the capital’s government such that security needs might compel military intervention in that area. If that should occur, we might be open to establishing a condominium type of governmental arrangement between all our government. A Serenity Board to take charge of the city and its surrounding land area. Naturally, to avoid complications, such an entity would be composed of delegates from all three of our governments.
We also understand that, in any military action, certain governmental leaders in Unbowed would be considered targets for later ‘neutralizing.’ We strongly remind you that their Regent, its Whimsy, along with the latter’s two brothers, have strong connections to this Kingdom. Their safety is something of extreme importance to us. Keep in mind, regarding the Whimsy, the Olympian realm’s interest too. We cannot answer for any consequences if even the slightest harm should befall these individuals. We hope this admonition is clearly understood regarding actions which might endanger their future health.
Again, please do not interpret this message to you as an endorsement in any way of any planned military activity. We are merely setting out guideposts in case the unexpected should happen.

A private correspondence to Goblin Foreign Minister Cfhatrw found among the papers of Mottia, Foreign Minister of the Elf Republic. (Undated).
My dear Chipo,
By now you have received the same official message from that crafty Fae bastard that our government received twenty-four hours ago. These Fae are a deceptive lot. Despite their official protestations, they have clearly given us the go ahead to conduct our joint the invasion. Of course, like the greedy bastards they are, they expect a share of the spoils without ever getting their hands dirty. I have spoken with our Prime Minister. If we get both the districts we covet, we have no qualms about the Fae going into the areas which are heavily populated by their own kind. We trust your First Among Equals Executive is of a similar mindset.
Of course, they will publicly label us aggressors, and their action as merely compelled for the protection of a Fae population. However, we both know, having dealt with that slimy creature before, the Fae love to cry about the injustice of taking land by force even as they do it too.
Our cabinet also discussed his “suggestion” regarding the future of the Unbowed capital and its central district with its mixed mongrel population. We feel that it would be in the best interest for our three governments to create this so-called Security Board to not only avoid chaos in the city but also to keep the peace between our respective governments. Since the central district has such a mixed species of inhabitants, a firm rule by the three of us reduces the chances of hostility and sabotage from a resistance movement.
Lastly, that old Fae pointy eared bastard does make a valid point regarding the Regent, their Whimsy, and his brothers. The Regent is his nephew and heir. Any harm to the Fae boy would needlessly create hostility towards us in any future interactions with his office. As for the Whimsy and family, we feel it would be highly foolish to make an enemy of the Fae’s Kingdom’s Whimsy. His reputation for efficient action combined with his skillful ability to kill should give all of us pause. In addition, making an enemy of the Olympian gods is unthinkable. I suggest that, at the proper time, we figure a safe manner to secure them. They could be held for later release. Naturally, any other persons holding Unbowed leadership positions must be subject to neutralization.

Reply from Goblin Foreign Minister attached to the above correspondence. (Undated).
My dear Motty. I send my greetings,
I totally agree with your analysis of the situation. Especially your insight on the perfidy of the Fae government in this matter. There is no need to engage in a battle with them over lands that we have no interest in occupying. My government says, let them have them. We would further agree to their suggestion of a condominium regarding the capital and its district. We have no desire to solely rule over any mixed species areas. They are more trouble than they are worth. However, since your government has decided to participate in his Serenity Board, we will send delegates as well as a sign of our good faith. We suggest that the city be renamed to reflect the board’s name. I also think it would be a best to wipe out the future use of the term ‘unbowed’ from their collective consciousness. Once we are running things, the population should understand this is a clear break with their past.
Regarding the fate of the Regent and the others, all care will be taken to avoid any unpleasantness regarding their health. Our troops have been thoroughly instructed on this matter. It has been made clear that any defiance of this command will result in death. Let us know when you wish to undertake this ‘reclamation operation’ and we will send members to participate in it.
The only person we are interested in keeping is the goblin race traitor, Divnuk, who runs their army. We want to bring him to our seat of government to make an example of the consequences of betraying your own species. Arrangements have been made for his public trial. After his conviction, he will be publicly castrated of his goblin manhood. He will then be sentenced to life working in the northern mines of our realm. There has been some debate about whether to simply execute him. However, there is a general feeling that his death in such a manner might make him a martyr to his people. He will end his days in anonymity as a nameless eunuch identified simply by a slave number. I am confident you are aware few if any survive the mines after one year. I am happy to say the death rate rises to one hundred percent before two years have expired.
We will begin our invasion within three days. May my government finally suggest that, as a military tactic to ensure success, you delay your invasion force for forty-eight hours after that our incursion. Our thoughts are that, while the Unbound forces are facing us in battle, you can swoop in from behind to crush them in a pincer movement.
Although the issue has not come up regarding the half Fae/half goblin King of that place, we have taken some preemptive steps. We felt it was best to clear him off the board. Recently, one of our agents managed to slip him a magical potion during some reception he attended in the human world. While not deadly, he is now running a high fever and delirious. Its effects will last for some time before his mind clears and he recovers. We believe that is sufficient time to complete our operations and present him with a treaty to sign. We will explain to him that the alternative of noncompliance will be the execution of prisoners of war that both our governments hold. We had contemplated a simple assassination. Our representative to the New York City’s Supernatural Council pointed out his marriage connection to an immensely powerful werewolf clan in that human world. We hope our decision to remove him from taking any action during the events meets with your approval.

Dispatch from Lieutenant Caro, stationed on the goblin border, to General Divnuk found misfiled in Serenity City’s military archives. Dated on the fourth day of the god Kalenew’s birth.
Sir,
My scouts have reported that there seems to be a large goblin army massing along the border. In response my inquiry they assured me they are merely in the process of undertaking a military exercise. However, from the number of troops, and the diversity of their equipment, their claim seems doubtful. Unlike in the past, where prior notice was given for any military border movements, this one has suddenly sprung up without any warning. I believe a border crossing is highly likely. Judging from the strength of the forces, this would not be a small incursion. I put my troops on high alert, and in a defensive position. I await further orders. I also respectfully request reinforcements.
Respectfully,
Lieutenant Caro

From General Divnuk to the Regent from the border with the goblins on the seventh setting of the Supreme God’s presence.
Our forces barely arrived before an incursion by the goblin army hit. I am sure you have heard that fighting has been very intense. I am happy to report that our mixed troops have performed excellently. In many cases we were able to push back some of the enemy. At present we are in defensive positions. Their casualties are high. They are paying dearly for every inch of land that they try to seize. Still, their numbers are impressive. Wave after wave confront us. I have sent word to the rest of our troops throughout our Kingdom. I have instructed them to leave a skeleton crew on patrols along our other borders and send as many men and women as possible to help us hold the line. I would ask that you reach out to the Fae forces in the Wegard Fortress and find out if they will give us assistance. Long live our Kingdom.
General Divnuk
Handwritten at bottom of the report:
My dearest love and possessor of my heart. Honestly, things are very grave. Wave after wave of goblins have been striking against our defenses. Without adequate reinforcements, I do not know how long we can hold out. I do not want to subject our soldiers to needless slaughter if our line is broken. More troubling is reports about conditions at our border with the Elf Republic. Troops have been spotted. There is a chance that we may face an invasion from them as well. If you hear anything let me know. I think you should let the Fae fortress know this information. It might spur the Fae government into some type of action to prevent that from happening. I do not believe the elves will invade if they know it could trigger the Fae army’s involvement. Regardless, we will fight. You will have my love throughout eternity. It is vital that you and the rest of the government stay safe. You are the pivot around which, our continued survival as a Kingdom revolves. My love…me gonna loves ya 'til ya croak!

Note from Croetus, Fae Commander of Wegard Fortress to Unbowed’s Regent. (Undated and found among the Regent’s private papers).
I am in receipt of your request for assistance. I have been instructed by my government to state to you that, under no circumstances, will we involve ourselves in a conflict between your government and any other species government. Our position is that we are neutral. We have no interest in injecting ourselves into any altercations with your neighbors. Therefore, neither equipment nor any Fae forces will leave this fortress
Commander Croetus
(Handwritten note attached to this document)
Alain, I am sorry I cannot be of any help. I have contacted my government and apprised them of conditions. I strongly advised them that a show of force by us or even a diplomatic warning might cause the elves to hesitate from undertaking any potential action. All my arguments have been dismissed. I did not even write this official reply. It came directly from the First Minister and was composed by him. I was ordered to deliver it without any alterations. He firmly instructed me that, if I cannot follow a policy of non-involvement, my second command has been authorized to assume command of the fortress. I feel that at least remaining as commander might enable me, at some critical moment, to do something. Therefore, I have explicitly stated that I would comply. Privately, I am trying to think of someway to help. So far, I have not produced any solution to circumvent their orders.

We have received information regarding the intrusion by the goblin forces. Your information about the Elf Republic’s using you for covert inquiries about Unbowed has proven to be of immense value to our realm. We are fully cognizant of the extreme danger of your position. A letter from a Private Xantos of the Unbowed Centur Division to his incubus mother courtesy of his great nephew. Dated on the tenth day of the circumcision of Grundinica.
I hope this finds you all in good health. I am sure you are aware of what is going on here. General Divnuk and support troops barely arrived before the goblins crossed the border. For days fighting has been intense. Things have quieted down today so, I am taking this opportunity to send you this letter. The General has assured everyone that any messages we wish to write will be carried along with dispatches being sent back to the capital. Even though no fighting is going on right now, it is clear that the enemy is simply taking the time to reposition for the next attack. Thankfully, the General has trained us for battle. It shows in the courage and confidence that everybody is displaying. The one thing you cannot prepare for is the sound of death all around you or, how it feels when you take your first life. There is really no time to dwell on feelings when that happens. If you pause, you may be the one that dies. At night though, thoughts of your death floats before you. Mother, whatever happens in the future, I do not think I will ever forget the sounds of those dying. Worse than that are the cries of my fellow comrades who are injured and beyond any medical assistance.
Everyone is exhausted but resolved to keep fighting. Some of us have heard that the Elf Republic is about to send troops across the border to attack us from our rear. I do not know if we can withstand that type of assault from both sides. However, the General constantly inspires all of us to do our best. Everyone here knows that he will never desert us. I would only say this to you, so keep it in your heart. I have a bit of a crush on him. Though, it is clear he is desperately in love with someone else. Give my love to the rest of the family. If the worst does happen to me, tell them my last words were simply…LONG LIVE UNBOWED.

An undated letter from a goblin soldier involved in the invasion. Sent to his family. Name withheld at their request to avoid a visit from their government.
We have been fighting now for a few days. Our commander initially told us that the Unbowed troops were made up of a motley group of gutter species who would yield at the first sign of battle. Nothing could be further from the truth. They have taken up defensive positions. To the shock of many of us, they have inflicted heavy casualties on us. They have not yielded the smallest piece of their land. Yesterday our local captain berated us for not breaking through their lines. Many of us are wondering where the local goblin population of this area has gone to. We were informed that they were oppressed and would eagerly join us in a fight to liberate themselves. Yet not only is this not the case but, we can see goblin fighters in the Unbowed army fighting alongside their fellow non-goblin species with equal vigor against us.
Our Commander addressed us last night. He told us that the Elf Republic troops have crossed the border to join us to expel these defenders from their positions. I cannot help but have a grudging respect for these Unbowed fighters, and particularly their goblin general. Unlike our Commander, who safely stays way behind the lines, their leader has been seen on many occasions in the thick of battle. All of us have been told that he was not to be killed but taken alive. He was very firm that any defiance of this order would result in our execution. The Commander repeated this threat again last night while promising a tremendous reward for any of us that capture him. By the gods, right now all I care about is staying alive in the face of such resistance.

Undated report found among the former Regent’s papers. Its writer is unknown.
Troops from the Elf Republic crossed the river late in the night on the second day of lunar mists. Only a skeleton force consisting of less than seventy-five fighters was based along the river. The elf army they faced was over five thousand strong. Our fighters were easily surrounded. Fighting took place. Twenty Unbowed soldiers were killed with many more wounded. It became obvious that further resistance was futile. To prevent a total slaughter, the officer in charge asked for terms of surrender. Assurance of life and medical treatment was given. The non-elf survivors are being held as prisoners of war by the elf government. Elf fighters in the Unbowed unit were disarmed and told to go home to protect their families. The elf army is moving towards the goblin border districts. It is clear that they intend to join in the battle currently going on in that area.
Reports of looting, rape, and other atrocities committed upon non-elf citizens of the Kingdom by roving bands of elf soldiers. Terrified non-elf citizens in the three northeastern districts are fleeing towards the capital.
All three of these districts will soon be completely overrun. Any remaining military forces of our government in those areas are providing security to the refugees as they race to our capital. Before surrendering, the officer of the patrol sent word to General Divnuk that elf troops should arrive on the borders of the northwestern districts within twenty hours. He sent me to inform our government.

Capital Talk
By Uganda Grabtas
Well, I can hardly know where to begin. As I sit here composing my script for tomorrow’s news edition, my mind is awash with everything that occurred within the last few hours. The elite of our Kingdom filled every single seat. I saw various ministers of government and heads of major news scribblers in attendance. During an intermission in the opera’s performance, word reached us that the elves had now sent an army across the border into that troublesome kingdom. You know the one. The place we happily expelled from the peace of our realm. Of course, everyone was excited by the news. After that I am sure many in our audience felt continuing their focus on the operatic performances would be a daunting task. As we returned to our seats, many of us were also stirred up by the possibility that the Fae citizens in that Kingdom might be in danger.
Despite signals from the opera house management for everyone to quiet down, it did not appear as if anybody was really going to listen. Then, unexpectedly, the curtain rose. Vera, a vision in a white robe with her dark hair flowing to her shoulders, walked onto the stage. Behind her was the Great Temple engulfed in magical created simulated flames. Her presence quieted the crowd. Now the focus of attention, she suddenly began the final aria of the opera. She stood before us like a goddess singing about never surrendering one’s honor. When she concluded, the applause was deafening. Raising her hand, everyone quickly silenced. Her maidens, also dressed in white robes with hair undone, then joined her onstage. Together they danced into the burning. As they did, her voice unexpectedly sang the final lines from an old Fae battle-song. I can still hear those words, before the curtain fell.
"We are the Feywild folk. We flinch from no fray. Our troth bids us shield our kin. Hark, innocent Feywild souls in realms afar wend into peril. Shall we turn deaf ears to their pleas for succor? We are the Feywild folk. When shadows creep upon any of us, we gather as one to deliver them from doom."
The Fae in the audience erupted into thunderous applause. Tears flowed from everyone in the crowd. We all took up the ancient cry: When shadows creep upon any of us, we gather as one to deliver them from doom.

A document found among the papers of First Minister Valde.
Last night was a triumph. Our worries about negative reactions to committing troops to protect the southern three districts have dissipated. Everybody in positions of power was at the opera last night. The singing that old Fae battle song was truly inspired. It whipped the crowd into a patriotic frenzy. Today they are leading opinion in calling for our intervention in that area. Well opera can inspire strong emotions. It certainly inoculated us in government from any accusations of war mongering. We can justify our actions as being compelled by the need to protect innocent Fae living in that bothersome Kingdom.
I have selected our best general to go to the Wegard Fortress and assume command. We have detailed ten thousand soldiers to accompany him. Considering Commander Croetus’ involvement with Unbowed’s Whimsy, his obedience is questionable. Our General has orders to meet with Croetus and immediately take him into protective custody. He will be held without charges until the conclusion of events. Afterwards, he can be released with profound apologies for a terrible misunderstanding.

An elf war correspondence’s unpublished news article that was found by his family among his papers. It is marked as “permission to print denied” with a stamp from the elf board of censors. The reporter’s name is withheld at family’s request
Our troops crossed the river in the early morning mist on the twelfth hour of the sun. We faced only a small patrol which, surprisingly, stood their ground. Even though they were vastly outnumbered, they resisted while suffering heavy losses. In the end, as one could predict, they were forced to ask for terms of surrender.
Morale among our troops was high. As we proceeded deeper into the countryside, I was surprised that no elf inhabitants seem to welcome us. In fact, they were actually hostile. This annoyed quite a number of elf troops who would came here to liberate them from oppression.
I was with the main part of our army. However, the army sent out small scouting bands to make sure there would be no traps that would harass us. Later that night, when these groups returned, they boasted about driving off non-elves from their homes. Some of them proudly boasted how they committed acts of atrocity, both of a physical and sexual nature, on attractive young non-elves. When I confronted the General of our army about such actions, he informed me that it was all lies. He accused me of not being sufficiently loyal to our Republic. His message to me was clearly received. Stay quiet or I would be arrested and sent home in disgrace. I decided that I needed to be here to record what was going on. I apologized, even though I did not feel apologetic at all, so I could stay and bear witness to events.
Over the next days, our army swiftly moved forward. Any resistance was quickly overcome. We finally arrived at the Unbowed/goblin border to find fierce fighting still taking place between Unbowed troops and goblin forces. If we thought we would easily sweep in to crush the Unbowed troops, we were quickly disabused of that idea.
Somehow the Unbowed troops managed to pivot part of their forces to confront us while still fighting the goblins. It was another hopeless situation for them. At some point they must have realized to stay was suicidal. During the night of the second day of the god Batteq, their military commander and his soldiers managed to slip away. When this was discovered the next morning, the officers in both armies seemed to panic.
The Generals of both the goblin and elf army immediately sent out bands of soldiers with orders to find the Unbowed military leader at all costs. A band of goblin soldiers did manage to accomplish it. He was brought in showing signs of a savage beating. The goblin General insisted that he maintain custody of the prisoner. Our General quickly agreed.
Having appeared to have crushed any potential military resistance, our elf army retired from the field. We swiftly moved into the northeastern three provinces to complete their occupation. I assume the goblins did the same with the northwestern ones they later annexed. A day later a messenger arrived to say that the Fae had marched into the realm’s southern provinces and were moving towards the center district.
Considering this information, a unit was hastily assembled and ordered to go to the Unbowed Capital’s district borders. I was later told a goblin unit was also dispatched to do the same thing.
This reporter feels a grudging respect for the defenders of this land. As I stated before, at no time have I seen any of the elf locals welcoming us as liberators. Their hostility leads me to wonder if our government proclaiming we came to the rescue oppressed elves has any foundation in truth.

A letter from a goblin soldier to his family. Their family wished not to be identified. (Undated).
To my family I send greetings,
Fighting has ceased, and things have finally quieted down. The arrival of the elf army broke the back of the Unbowed force’s resistance. For many of us it was a relief. After the fighting ended, however, things occurred, which caused me much shame as a goblin.
I am sure you know that the Unbowed troops were led by a goblin general. At some point, after the elves arrived, he managed to get his surrounded soldiers to safety. His capture was a top priority for our Commander. Squads were sent to find him. One of our units did it. Even though he put up a stiff resistance, the numbers were against him. In the end, he was taken captive along with some of his unit that were with him.
He was brought before our Commander, while the rest of his soldiers were taken to a prisoner of war camp. He showed signs of extreme physical abuse, but no one said anything. Our Commander had him shackled and shown before our assembled troops. To my disgust, our Commander proceeded to publicly berate and insult him. That was bad enough but, upon the conclusion of his tirade, he had the man stripped naked in front of all of us. He then threw him, still naked, into a cage where he was displayed for everyone to see. Throughout it all the man stayed quiet. He barely acknowledged his surroundings which, only contributed to the Commander’s fury.
I have always been a loyal soldier and proud of our country. Yet I must confess that our Commander’s actions mortified me. Regardless of how one feels, this goblin, fought with bravery and deserved respect as a captured prisoner. Everyone knows the rules of war on how one must treat such detainees. I can honestly say none of that was followed in this case. What made it even more shameful for me was that I was assigned to the squad that was to guard him. It was the most unpleasant duty I ever had to perform. Thankfully, our Captain showed compassion. The night was cold. He handed the man a blanket that he could wrap himself in it and would not freeze during the night.
The next morning the Commander ordered the cage to be loaded on a transportation vehicle that would take him to the capital. He told the goblin he would face trial and sentenced to the mines. The Commander mockingly told the prisoner that the government was reviving a tradition once used against powerful captured enemies. One whose purpose had been a demonstration of power and a psychological blow upon the enemy’s self-image. I could not believe it when he said it was to be castration. It has not been practiced in over a thousand years. To my further disgust, I overheard the Commander whisper to him that his officers would be allowed to sodomize him before he was sent off to the mines. Others guarding him heard it too. We looked at each other. We all thought the same thing. Later we all agreed to volunteer to escort the cage and its prisoner back to the capital. I know the gods will approve of our decision to… {a presumed second page of this letter is missing}

The diary entries from Arandi Testarse, a changeling member of the Unbowed Regent’s war council. They contain priceless information regarding what was going on in the Unbowed’s government while these events were unfolding. They have never been shown to anyone. The family had kept them as a carefully guarded secret. Until now, they feared retribution from various governments if they were shown to anyone. The following selections are printed verbatim.
Third day under the moon of Greb
Today I was called in by the Regent and told that he and General Divnuk had received word that the goblins were assembling a large armed force on the border. The General had left with reinforcements to supplement the troops that are already there along the border. I have been honored with a position on a war council as the Assembly representative from the Multi-species Beings Party . A meeting will take place later tonight where I will meet others on this body.
Fourth day under the winning star of Tigga.
I have just arrived home after an exhausting night. The war council met in the Regent’s small assembly room. I met my fellow members. Sabo, who speaks on behalf of Elf Party, Neta Boo of the political party of the goblins, some prominent non elf/goblin merchants, Henie the General’s Second in Command, as well as heads of various Kingdom agencies including our Whimsy. The Regent informed us that reports had reached him that the goblins had decided to cross the border area in the northwestern provinces. Everyone on the council assured him of their support. The representatives of the elf and goblin population of our realm firmly stated that they had no desire to be seen as anything other than loyal subjects. Phoebus, our Whimsy pointed out that this news might cause panic both within the capital and in the other districts. He suggested we undertake steps to calm the population. He has his Aztec law officers scattered throughout the city at critical points. Their instructions are to maintain an air of normality for everyone’s benefit. The main meeting wrapped up early in the dawn hours today. I am exhausted. Hopefully, the incursion will be short-lived and easily routed. We are scheduled to meet again in the next time of day past the first shadow.
Seven strokes passed the first shadow
Reports have been coming in of intense fighting along the goblin border. So far, our troops have done us proud. They have held out against odds which, when I first heard the numbers being mentioned, shocked me to the very core of my being. Looking around the war council, I could see many of us that wondered if our army could continue to hold out against such a tremendous number of goblin troops. No one actually knows the purpose of this invasion, what they want or, what drove them to make such an attack. Some of the Fae on the council thought we should contact the Wegard Fortress to see if the Fae kingdom might consider, as our former protector, lending us help. The Regent said that he had already done so and was confident reply by them would be given shortly.
Six strokes passed the first shadow
After a short break, I returned to the council to discover that a reply had been sent from the Wegard Fortress informing us that they would take no position on events or lend any assistance to us in this matter. Arguments broke out in the council between non-Fae members and the Fae members of the council. Many of my fellow non-Fae accused the Fae race of treachery. As expected, the Fae vigorously defended their race’s honor. They reminded everyone that there was no obligation by the fortress to come to our aide. Their argument was ignored. What was not said was a feeling that, considering their quick reply, their government must have been aware of a pending invasion by the goblins. There can be no other explanation for such an immediate answer except that they had a prior warning. The idea gave me no comfort. The idea that that those who claimed friendship kept us in the dark, chilled me to my very bones. May the gods keep our armies, strong and safe.
The night day, the gray, Dawn goddess
Another meeting in the war council. My respect for the Regent has increased. He appears exhausted but is constantly taking part in public actions to keep everybody calm. He has made many walk-throughs in the capital engaging in street conversations with inhabitants, assuring them that things are going to be all right. His confident public demeanor is calming people. Yet I can see it in his eyes. He is gravely concerned.
The day of the celebration of the river goddess
The most horrific news possible has reached us. Thousands of troops from the Elf Republic have crossed the border. Non- elf refugees from the northeastern provinces are streaming into the city with tales of rape, plunder, and wanton destruction on the non-elves. Most of our army engaged at the goblin border. Little can be done to stop whatever it is the Elf Republic is planning to do in those provinces. Word has been sent to General Divnuk to inform him about the news regarding the elves. To my shame, the news has set off a panic among the city population. Incidents of violence against elves and goblins have been reported in certain neighborhoods. The Whimsy was not at the council meeting. We were told he had decided to personally go into every city area district to assess risks. Once this happens, he will assign men to stop attempts of lawlessness. Both his younger brothers have joined with him in this endeavor. They are going to separate sections of the city to, as one of them said, “show the flag.” I am not sure what that means but, if it keeps things calm, I will help display this item too.
Twilight in the blue mist by the third stroke of the clock
I barely arrived home from the council meeting. When I received a message that I should return it once. Walking into the mostly empty palace complex this late at night gave me an eerie feeling. There were a few guards patrolling throughout the shadowy corridors. Everything felt on edge. Upon my arrival, I was surprised to find only the Regent, Henow, the Whimsy, his brothers, two troll merchants, the incubus representative from our university, and a siren from our Great Temple. I inquired why the other members were absent. The Regent informed me that the elves, Fae, and goblins on our council had suddenly left the city without warning. A search had been conducted of their homes. Documents were discovered showing that they were all feeding information to the invading forces. Other specie members of the government and merchant class have resigned citing health issues or pressing family concerns. Clearly, in light of the desertions they are hedging their bets. I will not be a coward. I told them I will stay.
With this new situation, word has gone out to the surrounding suburban inhabitants to come to the city and receive protection behind the city’s defensive battlements. Maps were displayed to me with explanations about where troops and law enforcement officers are being stationed. A convenient place where food supplies are being gathered has been set up. It will under my direct supervision. I will run the distribution of food to ensure everyone will receive sufficient sustenance for as long as possible. Tonight, when I returned home, I dropped to my knees before my local household gods. I prayed for my country and my city. Despite the confidence being shown by everyone at tonight’s meeting, we all understood that withstanding a prolong siege is just not possible. More worrying is that we have received no dispatches from the goblin border area. The gods only know what is going on there.
The day of the swirling fog of the God Ganda
The worst possible news. In the face of overwhelming odds, and facing an enemy on both sides, our valiant soldiers have made a tactical retreat from the goblin border area. The first remnants of those fighters have entered the city perimeters. They have been quickly assigned to join other soldiers on the capital’s defensive fortifications. Refugees from all six northern districts are continually streaming into the city. More reports of atrocities upon non-elf and non-goblins have become a daily occurrence. The Regent is still going about the city encouraging everybody to stay strong. I marvel at his ability to maintain a display of confidence in the face of such devastating news. In particular, knowing his intimate relationship with General Divnuk, he must be frantic over his fate. My recent check of our food supplies shows that we are dangerously low. I doubt if we have more than a few days before supplies run out.
On the night of the mountain goat
Tonight, we received two more blows. I do not know which was worse. Word reached us that General Divnuk has been taken by the goblins. The news came through the “courtesy,” if one could call it that, of the goblin General. As it was read to us, his sneering contempt for our General dripped off the pages. He wrote that General Divnuk was a species traitor and thus, was ineligible for treatment as a war prisoner. He went on to tell us that our General would be tried in their capital, castrated, and then sent to the mines. The horror of a medical mutilation, followed by slavery in a place we all know is a death sentence, displays a cold barbarianism that chills one to the very bone. I do not know how our Regent kept his composure while he read us the letter. By the eternal gods, watching him hold in his emotions in check, in order not to shatter in front of us, was the bravest thing I ever saw. I would die to defend this person and my country now from these savages.
Yet an even more horrible report came that same day. The Fae forces have finally moved out of Wegard but not to come to our defense. With treacherous hypocrisy, they announced they felt compelled to “maintain order” in our three southern districts. They cited the atrocities in our other districts as justification. I boiled with anger as their words. What duplicity to say they act only to protect the Fae population in those areas from the ravaging armies to the north. It is obvious they are eager to steal our land too.
It was no exaggeration to admit we were stunned when we heard this news. Although no one wishes to surrender, we all know that holding off three separate armies is impossible. The Regent told us to go home and take some rest. We are to return in four hours to discuss future options. As I left, I wondered if that was his subtle way of suggesting we contemplate terms surrender.
Three hours into the night of the mountain goat
We all met to discuss what we should do next. The Regent informed us that we have only the troops that are currently in the city right now to protect a population that is growing every day with incoming refugees. I reported that food supplies will run out in two days. Of course, I also added that this calculation was based upon the current number of people seeking shelter in the city. As more arrive that time estimate would be revised downward. Our scouts have informed us that all three invading governments are within hours of reaching the border of the capital district. Discussions ensued about whether to surrender or, continue to fight to the very end.
A now Acting-General Henow reminded us that adopting the choice to fight could involve tremendous loss of life. He pointed out that a conquering army could very well allow its soldiers to sack the city. I asked if our King, with his werewolf contacts in the human dimension, might get us help. I was told that, before the first invasion, the Regent had been informed Galen had fallen prey to a suspicious malady of suspected magical origins. Until a few days ago, he had lay in a coma hovering between life and death. Though now awake he can barely stand; his mind still suffering its disorientating effects. Such as a state of affairs truly is depressing. Considering all the treachery and betrayal of these days, I am sure one of the three governments had taken steps to bring about this event. In the end, we all reluctantly conceded that it would be best to ask for terms of surrender rather than cause the deaths of innocent civilians. It was with a dejected spirit that I walked home. I looked around seeing the panic on people’s faces. Ever since this horror began, we have all tried to hold up our spirits. Every temple in the city has been filled with worshipers praying for salvation and safety. In my gloomy frame of mind, I decided that if gods had heard us, they chose to ignore our pleas.
On the first golden dawn of the sun, goddess Vibitt
I returned home today, having attended the final meeting of the war council. The invading armies of the three governments have paused their advance on the borders of the Capitol District. In response to our request for terms, they have informed us that terms would only be discussed with Galen the First. They further stated that the Whimsy would be held responsible for maintaining order in the city. The Regent was instructed to immediately present himself to the Fae army, where he will be taken into custody. Officer Henow and his men must disarm. They will be transported to join others in the prisoner of war camps. They have also presented us with a proclamation to be read in every public square, assembly hall, and temple within the city. It reads as follows.
To the people living in the capital of the Kingdom of Unbowed, we send our greetings. We do not intend to enter the city with our armies. We do, however, expect everyone to obey the rule of law and not create chaos. Your Regent will be placed into protective custody. Executive authority will be exercised by a Serenity Board composed of a representative from each of our governments. They will arrive within hours. In the meantime, your Whimsy is commanded, under pain of death, to maintain law and order in the city. We expect everybody to go about their business as usual. There will be no harm to anyone. Safety is also assured to the refugees in the city. To them we say that you may return to your homes. Our armies are enforcing the rule of law in every district which we currently occupy. You need no longer fear in returning. We come not as conquerors, but our liberators to remove a corrupt tyrannical regime that plotted your destruction and oppressed you.
Signed: The Generals of the Elf, Goblin, and Fae armies of liberators.
On the 11th day of the moon blood red
Today I watched as a small contingent of soldiers from each of the three armies, escorted our new Serenity Board into the city. Everyone silently watched as they passed through the streets towards the palace. The mood of the crowd was solemn. Nobody dared undertake any hostile action. Everyone realized that, with thousands of troops just outside the city, any rioting or disruption would bring instant retribution. Upon their arrival, our new executive rulers declared that certain corrupt officials, that served in the Unbowed government, would be removed from office. I can only assume that I will be among that number. We were also told that our realm’s Assembly was dissolved. As I walked home, I have never seen the city so quiet. A dust to dawn curfew has been imposed, which only serves to further extinguish city life. May the gods help us all.

A private correspondence to Goblin Foreign Minister Cfhatrw found among the papers of Mottia, Foreign Minister of the Elf Republic. (Undated).
Our campaign has been entirely successful. The only thing left to do is to make their so-called King sign a document of submission. I believe, with your agreement, that its terminology be as humiliating as possible. After all, the goal is not only to legitimize what we have taken but, to totally demolish his reputation. By forcing him to degrade himself, we can destroy the morale of any which would seek to resist the new state of affairs. I had original prepared a similar document of admission for the Regent’s signature. However, our Fae friend insisted he would not tolerate any tarnishing his nephew’s name. In the interest of unity, I conceded the issue.

Reply from Goblin Foreign Minister attached to the above correspondence. (Undated).
I agree to your compromise on his nephew. As for their King, we must compose words that he must sign that are as personally degrading as possible. I want his manhood verbally castrated; his honor tarnished beyond redemption. We insist Divnuk’s name be included in any contemplated degradation too. Any possibility of his being seen as a heroic defender or as a man must be crushed. They both must be seen as oppressors and sexual deviants.
There is one matter which I need to bring up with you. I do not wish to be indiscreet. However, it is a matter I am constrained to bring up. We prefer our occupation and annexation to not have any problems. Unfortunately, some of the actions of your army have given us some concern. I am referring to the fact that your military has engaged in “rescuing” many attractive, young non-elves of both sexes. While I appreciate no goblin youths have been “rescued,” your troops have recently entered our districts looking for more of such species. This has proven quite disruptive with our efforts to assure the inhabitants of our new districts that they are in no danger from us. I am told you are involved in arranging to bring them back to the Republic to be sold as pleasure slaves to your elites as well as the various brothels in your capital. You appear to either be in charge or know who oversees these efforts. Be advised my government would appreciate your gangs discreetly stop their foraging in our lands.
Again, my concerns is not a criticism of you or your culture. I understand, though elves have a prejudice against those who are not of their species, that does not apply to the sexual craving elves have for youthful non-elves. We do not object to taking slaves. At some point in the future, we too will be “rescuing” non-goblin/elf goblin inhabitants in the areas that we occupy. They will be brought back to our capital to be sold as house slaves or sacrificed to our war gods. I merely suggest that you might not be so aggressive right now. We do not wish to alert the Fae government about what is happening. Their repulsion for both slavery and religious blood sacrifices is well known. May the gods forbid that they ever find out, or suspect, a few youthful Fae boys and girls are also being taken in these outings. Their military fury upon your government would be comprehensive. Please understand we would not come to your defense. { It is unknown if there was a reply to this issue. It has been acknowledged that many young people disappeared during this time. Yet the governments of the occupying powers have insisted that they had simply scattered because of the dislocation of war}.

The last diary entry from Arandi Testarse .
On the 12th day of the moon blood red
I, along with many others who served in the government or as top lecturers in our university, were called in to appear before the Serenity Board. We were shown the document of submission that is being presented to Galen the First for his signature. Many of us were shocked by the words contained in it. I know everything in it is false. I fear parts of our population, who do not know these men as I do, will believe these lies.
All of us were informed that our services for our government or our university were no longer required. We would be enrolled in a reeducation center where we would be instructed on how things will run in the future. We were all sent home to gather belongings that we would need for what they called, an extended stay as their guests. What a delightful way of referring to a prison term. A few contemplated escaping but, with the city surrounded, it is all just bravado. As a changeling, I could shift my appearance and ride out the storm, but that would be cowardly. Besides, I have children, grandchildren, brothers, and sisters to consider. I have no doubt the new administration would punish them in my stead if I fled.
As I walked the streets, everyone looked dejected. By chance, a saw a shackled Henow being led towards the palace. The goblin in charge of his guards told me Henow was being taken to the reeducation camp.
I have finished making this last entry. I am leaving these journals with my family. I wonder if I will ever return to them.
Author’s note: according to the family member who handed me these diaries from their great uncle, he was never seen after he left for “reeducation.” Word was later received that he, and many others being reeducated, had succumbed to illness. The return of his body was refused on the grounds of contagion from his corpse.

Found among the papers of Galen the first of the Kingdom of Unbowed. Stored in the historical archives of New York City’s Supernatural Council.
Enclosed you will find articles of surrender to sign and return. Please be advised that it may not be altered in anyway . We remind you to keep in mind that various prisoners of war are in the custody of our respective governments. If we do not receive this document signed by you within forty -eight hours, we cannot guarantee their continued good health.

Officially published document ending hostilities.
I, Galen the First of the Unbowed Kingdom, acknowledge that my realm illegally held lands which by right belonged to both the goblin and elf governments. I further acknowledge that our government has consistently oppressed elves and goblins living here without any justification. In light our criminal actions, I acknowledge that both governments were justified to undertake military action. I admit that both General Divnuk and I have oppressed every species in these lands and abused many to satisfy our depraved sexual perversions. I admit my rule was nothing more than an oppressive criminal enterprise posing as a government. In light of this I declare:
Those districts currently held by the elf, goblin, and Fae governments rightfully belong to those kingdoms. I admit we never had a proper claim to them. Their annexation by these respective governments is both right and proper.
Because the Kingdom that I ruled was nothing more than a criminal organization, it is here by declare dissolved. I would further acknowledge that the central district, with its capital city, is rightfully stripped of its old name. A new one will be assigned at the pleasure of the respective liberator governments. Therefore, I humbly request that the capital city and its central district be placed under the protection of these three respective governments.
I swear that I will never enter the Netherworld again. I accept and deserve perpetual banishment. Those who shared in our criminal rule have been rightfully removed from office and exiled from this region as well. I humbly apologize to the people over whom I once claimed sovereignty over and beg forgiveness.
I sign this document freely and voluntarily in full knowledge and shame over our guilt. I forever renounce any claim by us or our descendants to any involvement with this region. Signed this fifty-second day of the festival month of the goddess Norita.

Final Thoughts:
I hope that the documents which, I have provided, give some insight into this particular moment in history. The job of a historian is to present the facts. In doing this, we let those who read it make the decisions about what occurred or the validity of justifications used for actions. I have presented these records without commenting. I leave it up to you to decide what they mean. You decide if what we currently take as historical fact was merely a cleverly crafted fiction.
What is an undeniable is that the former Kingdom’s central district and capital, renamed Serenity City, soon became a wealthy commercial center. It is still a multi species cosmopolitan metropolis with a vibrant, artistic community. A few years into the occupation the newly created Serenity Board established a local city council to assist in its running. Overtime time this governmental body assumed more power. Technically, the Serenity Board is still the executive power of this area. In fact, it is now nothing more than a rubber stamp for decisions made by this local governing body. Its former status as the capital of a now defunct kingdom is never brought up. Private polling indicates that, if its residents are not happy about what happened, they are at least content with how things are right now.
However, I would be remiss if I did not at least give an epilogue regarding some of the actors that have appeared in these documents. A few of the names are well known. Still, I think it would be helpful to set out what became of others.
The ministers of all three governments went on to have illustrious careers and retired with full honors. Their history can be gleaned from official records.
Galen the Bloody Tyrant and sexual degenerate , as all three official governments and history label him, was never heard from again. My recent record searching trip to New York City revealed that he was happily married. In truth, all records there show he was a respected member of the New York City’s supernatural community. The elf and goblin foreign ministers did their jobs very well. After his declaration was published, his reputation both as a man and ruler was forever tarnished. A story was spread that his illness, which kept him silent during the war, was merely cowardice on his part. Resistance under his banner became impossible in the minds of everyone in the Unbowed. He had groveled and humbled himself because of their promise to save lives. They had lied to him.
As intended, General Divnuk’s reputation was also destroyed. His ultimate fate is lost in the shadows. Despite extensive research, the only thing we have been able to ascertain is that he never arrived in the goblin capital. If he did, his presence was never recorded. I checked with the records of the goblin mining corporations. None show him on a list of those who worked in their mines as a state slave. Was he somehow allowed to escape on the way to his trial? Was he given an honorable death by his guards? You can decide. Curiously, there is no record that any soldiers guarding him were punished.
Unbowed’s Regent was transferred to the Fae Kingdom. Records show that his uncle quickly arranged a political marriage for him. According to his great granddaughter he was a kind and considerate husband. Though he was fond of his spouse, it was a loveless marriage. He and his wife, the daughter of a highly prominent High Fae family, had six children. His sons and daughters went on to have illustrious careers in the Fae government. He never held another office. His great granddaughter described him as a gentle man who, somehow always had a deep hurt that never healed. He died peacefully in his sleep, surrounded by family.
Surprisingly Unbowed’s Whimsy survived the purge of other Unbowed office holders. He and his Aztec police squad continued handling law-enforcement in the city and its surrounding lands. Although I could discover no official documentation to confirm this fact, his descendants showed me letter from him informing his father about the reasons for his retention. The rationale was twofold. First, because his family was well connected to Fae government, Valde had insisted he retain his position. Second, all three governments quickly realized only he had the moral authority necessary to avoid chaos and lawlessness in such an unsettled time. In this letter he compared the Board to a chimera. Knowing this, he felt morally bound to stay and not leave the city and its people defenseless. Known to be fair and just, he had no problem confronting the Serenity Board when he felt wrongs were being committed. He retired beloved by the inhabitants of the district. In fact, his family was so respected, his son was appointed to carry on the Whimsy duties. Upon that son’s retirement, his grandson assumed the post. An office which he currently still holds. As for his brothers, his family told me they both returned to the Fae Kingdom and later entered politics. They too had families and held high positions in government.
Commander Croetus was released from custody and cleared of all charges of insubordination. Upon his vindication, he immediately resigned his commission. He returned to Unbowed’s former capital and married its Whimsy. The only record of further service that we could find for him was a brief mention that ‘he was an aid to his husband.’
I would be remiss if I did not mention Vara, the most famous opera singer of that era. Her artistry was well known and rightly applauded. In researching Valde’s papers, it became clear her role in these events was not solely confined to the stage. Could she be the double agent to whom his document referred? However, again that would be speculation on my part. In the future, more documents may be disclosed. Perhaps they will shed more light upon her life and her connection to events.
I am confident that once this work is published, it will cause a great uproar. However, truth can never be hidden, regardless of the cost. I have assembled all the papers, letters, memos, and diaries to support my book. Justice requires that I press forward. Questions should be asked; answers sought. We need to know what truly happened to the people that were in the reeducation camps. Here in Serenity City, we should know about the valiant defense of our former Kingdom by our soldiers. Fighters who laid down their lives. We must also discuss the treachery that some committed in the time. Galen the First’s reputation should be restored to its rightful place. What we were told about him seems to be a lie.
I am sure many, in all three governments, would prefer that the myths and the deceptions continue. No government would also wish to be known for having engaged in massacring the top officials of a defeated foe to ease their conquest. It would be embarrassing to admit that certain honored members of their government engaged in a sex slave trade. Dentavo, my publisher, is afraid of offending them or the powerful families and institutions that profited by it. I am historian. My job is to tell the true story, not to tart it up with lies to please the powerful or cover up guilt.
In concluding, let us recall that famous statement made by the well-respected changeling Historian Ontae: never forget, that history can sometimes be a soothing balm created by our ancestors simply to allow us to face the future without guilt.
Biotesta, historian, at the University of Eternal Knowledge in Serenity City
*****
Breaking major news from Serenity City. Dated in the ninth sun rising of the goddess Ulma
Famed historian Biotesta, who was a distinguished professor at the University of Eternal Knowledge in Serenity City, perished in a fire at his home. Authorities have labeled the incident as an accident. Even more tragic, his newest work about the War of Liberation, along with all his supporting documentation, perished with him in the flames. Our hearts go out to his family.
An article in the society column of Serenity City’s major news outlet.
This writer has been confidentially informed that our city’s publisher, Dentavo, is about to be honored by the government for services rendered. We all send our congratulations to him and his family. I am told that, along with the patent of nobility, comes an impressive financial renumeration.
The End
Postscript: This story takes place in an alternative world outside of the universe set forth in the prior Chronicle books. A sort of ‘what if’ plot musing. Any correlation to present times is unintentional.
